This morning’s Wall Street Journal features an article on Overstock.com being penalized by Google for “gaming” search engine results.

The key “official” take-away: In Google’s mind, links obtained by means of payment (payola) are inherently weaker, and undermine a user’s search experience. Google frowns upon such a practice (paid links) but is powerless to stop it since there is no proof that the link was bought and paid for. There are somewhat obvious signs, however, such as obvious irrelevant anchor text within the context of the web site or the destination URL.

The unofficial take-away: Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. The article describes how jealous concerned competitors reported to Google that Overstock.com seemed to be purchasing links from teachers and students with access to web pages on influential “.edu” domains. (Google places extra emphasis on links from .edu websites. Overstock, it is thought, offered discounts and or outright payment to these site owners in exchange for links.)

So, some important lessons for SEO:

1. Don’t buy links (or at least not so many that your competitors turn you in).
2. Don’t be so successful that Google has to make a public example of you.
3. Stick to natural link-building techniques such as PR, social media, blog mentions and other “white hat” techniques.
